Organisation Profile

Gautrain, an initiative of the Gauteng Province Government (GPG), is a state-of-art rapid rail network in Gauteng. The rail connection comprises of two links, namely a link between Tshwane and Johannesburg and a link between OR Tambo International Airport and Sandton. Apart from the three terminal stations of these two links, seven other stations are linked by approximately 80 kilometres of rail along the route.

The service offers a fast, convenient, safe and efficient public transport service. It takes 15 minutes to travel from Sandton to OR Tambo International Airport on the Gautrain and 42 minutes from Hatfield in Tshwane to Park Station in Johannesburg.Buses and midibus are available to transport passengers during weekdays to and from all stations excluding the OR Tambo International Airport station.

A cash-free ticketing system and the use of reloadable smart cards, the Gautrain Card makes travelling on the Gautrain quick and convenient.Passengers can buy their Gautrain Cards at any Gautrain station as well as approved service outlets.

Gautrain connects people, places of interest and business; and creates a seamless connection between economic nodes and public transport corridors.

The Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) was established in 2006, in terms of the GMA Act (Act 5 of 2006). Critical to the GMA mandate is to ensure that the Gautrain System operates in a sustainable manner with a clear commitment to governance and the GPG’s primary economic objectives.

The primary objective of the Agency is to manage, coordinate and oversee the Gautrain in the interest of government and the Province. This includes matters such as; managing the relationship between the Province and the Concessionaire in terms of the Concession agreement; managing assets and finances; liaising with all relevant government structures and interested parties promoting the Project; and integrating the Project with other transport service.
