OverviewThe mission of the Eastern Cape Department of Safety and Liaison is to provide a safe and secure environment that supports growth and development through liaison with the relevant stakeholders.
The Department's strategic goals are to ensure effective and efficient governance and financial administration of the Department; oversee the effectiveness and efficiency of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape; and ensure effective social crime prevention.
The Department of Safety and Liaison's legal mandate and constitutional responsibility is to monitor police performance and conduct, to build community police relationships, and to facilitate social crime prevention initiatives. In carrying out its mandate, the Department is entitled to monitor police conduct; oversee the effectiveness and efficiency of the police service, including receiving reports on the police service; promote good relations between the police and the community; assess the effectiveness of visible policing with respect to crime and policing in the province; enforce regular monitoring and assessment of the SAPS in terms of its policies and effectiveness of its systems and recommend corrective measures to SAPS; demand the development of the capacity to conduct research on matters of safety and make it available; and recent, relevant and evidence-based information.
